Chairman’s message

The Haven Series has become an institution for East Coast sailors since its inception in 1972, and original members are still taking an active part.  The format has changed little over the years except that the IRC division now attracts the most entrants.

Sailing has become very popular but unfortunately numbers of those wishing to race have declined over the years.  It is noticeable that there are few new entrants to the Haven Series who are new to racing.  Perhaps skippers feel they may be intimidated by the experienced yachtsmen taking part but this should not be the case.  Entering the Haven Handicap class where an IRC certificate is not required will enable sailors who have not raced before to enjoy friendly competition.  To this end, and to encourage new entrants, the committee has decided to waive the entry fee for the Haven Handicap class in the Points Series to any newcomer (anyone who has not entered Points Series or Sunday Series for the past three years).

Furthermore I am offering a prize of two bottles of champagne to the person who encourages and persuades the most newcomers to the Series this year.

Those who race regularly will be pleased to note that the race fees for this season remain the same as last year.  I am sure that I speak for all competitors when I say we are extremely grateful to those who volunteer their time, expertise and boats for race officer duties.  I am sure you all thank them when you cross the finishing line.

At the back of this handbook you will find the names and contact numbers for members of the Haven Series committee.  If you would like to help the Series in any way or have any suggestions for improvement do not hesitate to get in touch.

One such suggestion the committee has implemented for this season is for the three passage races, which are sailed under Haven Handicap, to have an additional division for IRC-rated boats.  There is also a new trophy for the aggregate result for this division.

I would draw your attention to the Haven Series website (www.havenseries.org) where the information in this handbook is available together with updates through the season, plus the speedy results service.

Many Haven Series competitors also take part in other events such as SailEAST and EAORA which provide different race formats.  Local sailors also look forward to the Felixstowe Regatta, the major East Coast regatta, and we encourage you to take part in this event on 24th and 25th May.

Don’t forget the annual prizegiving dinner which is a must and this year takes place on Saturday 18th October at Waldringfield Golf Club with good food, good company and dancing.

Finally, may I wish you all an enjoyable racing year with fair winds and challenging courses.
